Howdy + Musings

And again with the lack of updates. I swear, I am going to get better about that. I MEAN IT. I WILL.

I am currently sitting in the dark in a hotel in College Station. I’m in town for the recruitment weekend for new graduate students, which I’m really excited about. We get to meet the professors, other new admissions, current students, etc. We’ll also get to sit in on classes, take tours, attend some panels, and various other things. Lots of information, lots of free food, all very good stuff. EXCITEMENT ABOUT SCHOOL, BASICALLY.

My dog is staying in my sister’s apartment, which is nice because it meant I didn’t have to bother trying to find someone to take care of him in San Antonio or mess with trying to get a dog-friendly room in the hotel. Which, it is a chain that tends to have dog-friendly rooms, but why make that extra level of hassle for the person setting up the block of rooms on behalf of the Comm Arts department, you know? Plus Duke likes hanging out with Rebel, my sister’s dog.

Anyway, if nothing else, I will endeavor to update this blog with my thoughts about the recruitment weekend, because one of the main reasons I started this blog in the first place was that I hoped I was going to get into grad school, and hey look! I did! So now that it’s becoming a reality, I might as well talk about it!

Now, as for my other musings, I’m thinking about starting a video blog. I know, I know. I can’t even manage to keep this thing updated regularly, why should I start a video blog to not update as well. But I think it would be fun, and I think if I plan ahead for several installments (because it wouldn’t just be a talk-about-my-life vlog, it would a fanthropology-themed one, I think) and even go as far as to film/edit the first few before I start posting, I might be able to stay on top of things.

(Also, I’m not gonna lie, part of me just wants to have an established non-fanvid/actual-vlog channel on which to post a Project for Awesome video by the time it rolls around again this December, because dammit, this year I am going to make a damn P4A video.)

Anyway, I was thinking that I would make short segments (like vlogbrothers-length, 3-4 minutes) in the vein of my “Newbie’s Guide to Fandom” project that I did for my producer’s and director’s seminar class. I’d tackle a different topic (or, you know, piece of a topic) in each video. I could have, like, Fanfic Fridays and talk about different aspects of fanfiction, and Talk-the-Talk Tuesdays where I talk about fandom vernacular or something. (Idk, I’m just tossing out ideas as I type.) I could also highlight my favorite tumblrs or fansites, talk about fandom history, etc. Basically the kind of stuff I want to do in grad school, in vlog form.

Right now I don’t really have that great of a camera with which to film it – just a point-and-shoot digital (or my iPhone, but that doesn’t have much in the way of space). But eventually I do want to get my hands on a DSLR anyway, so… we’ll see. It’s something to think about. And I do already have a Google handle of “thefanthropologist,” which means I already have that YouTube channel as well. It’s something to think about, anyway.

Think, think, think…
